Am I a Choco Leibniz or Jaffa Cake?

Kate Marston - Friday, September 02, 2016

We belong to local networking group Tring Together BusinessMart. I recently had the pleasure of being their first ‘Brief Encounter’ – an interview which is posted out via e-newsletter to all Tring Together BusinessMart members. Read the interview here and find out which biscuit I am…

NAME Kate Marston
BUSINESS KM Design & Puddingstone Distillery

Describe your typical day
Day usually starts by checking and responding to emails followed by a full day of design – could be anything from a website, a new logo, brand guidelines or marketing literature. I usually have anywhere from 10-20 projects on the go at any one time so I will be switching between them and responding to clients, writing quotes and project managing website development and printing. There could be a client meeting too or a networking event. And that’s before I put in a few hours on Puddingstone Distillery in the evening!

What inspires you?
Travelling abroad. Getting out and about and doing stuff that scares me and takes me out of my comfort zone.

What were you like at High School?
Dreadfully shy.

What type of biscuit would you be and why?
Tough question but I asked my hubby, Ben, and he says I’m a dark chocolate Choco Leibniz! Because they’re sophisticated and understated but layered and multi-faceted. Plus they have decorative pattern. Wow! I was thinking more Jaffa Cake – indecisive! Is it a cake or is it a biscuit? I had to ask Ben as I just couldn’t decide what I was… so definitely a Jaffa Cake. Oh, look at that, I just made a decision!

What 3 things would you take to a desert island other than food and water?
Right now a desert island sounds perfect so probably some sun cream, a hammock and a satellite phone to call for a boat (or maybe a seaplane as I’ve always wanted to go in one!) when I was ready to leave.

What do you like most about BusinessMart?
It’s local so I get to know people as business contacts but also get to know people on a personal level. Makes for much stronger relationships. It’s a great, buzzing community.

'How to Network Your Way to Success' by Paul Ryan

Kate Marston - Friday, July 03, 2015

Ever since I started KM Design I have attended many network meetings to meet new clients and trusted suppliers. It was at a Tring Together network meeting that I first met Paul Ryan, actor and founder of Improve On You (workshops in presentation skills) www.improveonyou.co.uk. Paul's energy, drive and commitment is infectious and his presenting skills are amazing. As a result of this first meeting I invited Paul to present to another network group, The Chilterns Communications Group. Again he impressed and the questions at the end went on for quite a while, with everyone wanting to learn more. Since then our paths have crossed often with Paul even giving me some presenting skills training – something I am building on. So I was delighted when Paul asked me to design the cover of his new book 'How to Network Your Way to Success'.

It's a great read with lots of useful tips. I particularly like Chapter 10 'My Wingman'. I'm going to try this soon. If you want to find out what this is then you'll have to buy Paul's book – available on Amazon! Even for people like me, who have been networking for many years, there's is something new to learn and lots of reminders of things I should be doing but have forgotten.
